The automotive industry is changing quickly, and for independent repair shops like Euro Auto Tech & Smog, the Right to Repair movement has become one of the most important issues affecting both our business and the customers we care about every day.

Modern vehicles are becoming increasingly dependent on manufacturer-controlled software, programming, and digital systems. The Repair Act was created to help ensure that independent repair facilities and vehicle owners have access to the same repair information, diagnostic tools, and software systems that dealerships receive from manufacturers. According to RepairAct.com, many automakers are limiting access to critical repair data, making it harder for independent shops to perform repairs that we are fully trained and equipped to handle.

This issue affects every driver, especially people trying to avoid expensive dealership pricing.

At Euro Auto Tech & Smog, we take a lot of pride in being one of the few independent European auto repair shops in San Diego County that provides premium-level service without premium dealership pricing. European vehicles require specialized tools, advanced diagnostics, and years of experience, and we work hard every day to offer honest, high-quality repairs at prices that are fair and realistic for our customers.

But what matters most to us is the people behind the vehicles.

One of the best feelings in this business is being able to help someone who may be going through a difficult time financially or personally. Sometimes a customer comes in stressed because they just received an overwhelming estimate elsewhere, or they’re worried they won’t be able to afford the repairs they need to safely stay on the road. Whenever possible, we do our best to help find alternatives, prioritize repairs, explain options honestly, and work within a customer’s situation instead of simply pushing the most expensive solution.

It’s extremely common for customers to go to a dealership for an oil change and come back with a laundry list of repairs that aren’t required for their car. Those customers that aren’t knowledgeable about cars, fairly assume that the dealership is being honest about the recommended repairs. However, if you were to go to a trusted local auto repair shop you might find that the those recommendations aren’t necessary at all or at the very least are more expensive than they need to be.

With local shops like ours, if we believe another shop may better fit a customer’s specific needs or budget, we are always happy to point them in the right direction. We believe independent auto repair facilities should support one another because at the end of the day, we all serve the same community.

That’s why the Right to Repair Act matters so much.

According to the Repair Act campaign:

  • Drivers spend an average of 36% more at dealerships compared to independent repair shops.
  • 63% of repair facilities report problems accessing repair information weekly or daily.
  • 51% of shops have had to send vehicles back to dealerships because manufacturers restricted access to necessary programming or repair systems.
  • By 2030, an estimated 95% of new vehicles will rely heavily on manufacturer-controlled wireless connectivity systems.

When manufacturers restrict access to repair information, it limits customer choice, raises repair costs, and puts unnecessary pressure on independent businesses that genuinely care about their customers and communities.

For European vehicle owners especially, this issue is becoming more serious every year as manufacturers continue adding proprietary systems to brands like BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volkswagen, Porsche, Volvo, and Land Rover.

Independent shops are not asking for shortcuts, we are simply asking for fair access so we can continue serving our customers properly.

At Euro Auto Tech & Smog, we believe customers should always have the freedom to choose where they repair their vehicles. We believe independent repair shops are valuable because we build relationships, provide honest guidance, support our local communities, and often save customers thousands of dollars compared to dealership costs.

The Right to Repair movement is about protecting those choices.

We appreciate every customer who trusts us with their vehicles, and we will continue doing everything we can to provide honest, dependable service while supporting the future of independent automotive repair.
