Check Engine Light | 2017 Audi A3 Sportback e-tron Premium

Let’s talk shop.

This week, a customer came in with a problem that we’ve come across a few times or so with a 2017 Audi A3 e-tron. The “Nothing Seems to be Wrong” problem. What does that mean? Well, basically, a check engine light comes on, seemingly, out of nowhere, and you try to take some notes as to what the problem is. So what do you do? You check the brakes, nothing. Then listen for any odd sounds, nothing. You feel around for different kinds of vibrations, nothing. So, what could it be? Let’s dive in.

Diagnosis

A check engine light doesn’t always necessarily mean something bad is happening under. Sometimes, it could be your Audi telling you that one of your systems needs attention before it becomes a bigger problem.

On this particular Audi A3 Sportback e-tron Premium (that’s a mouthful), we started with our diagnostic process, not the “guessing game” like some other people might initially do. We smoke-tested the EVAP system looking for leaks, but found none.

Now this is where things start to get more interesting. We performed a functional test of the EVAP leak detection pump and found that when the pump was activated, smoke was escaping directly from the pump.

What Needs to Be Done

With the test confirming the EVAP leak detection pump had failed, we let the customer know that it now required replacement. Customer approved. We replaced the part and performed another test just to make sure we could verify no other leaks.

Pro Tip:

We’ve said it once, and we’ll say it again. Don’t ignore your check engine light. European vehicles like this Audi use delicate emissions and EVAP systems that require the right scanning tools, testing procedures, and the right experience in order to pinpoint the main issue.

Result:

No more check engine light, no more leaks. Another happy customer and another successful day in the shop.

Timing Chain Replacement | 2014 Audi SQ5

Let’s talk shop. This 2014 Audi SQ5 came through the shop with what looked like a fairly routine oil leak. But once we got it on the lift and started digging deeper, we found a little surprise hiding behind the symptoms. Let’s dive in. Diagnosis On the 3.0 supercharged V6, timing chain system issues can become a serious concern as mileage adds up. Chain stretch, worn guides, tensioner problems, and related components can lead to timing faults, rattling noises, especially on cold starts, and, if ignored, potentially major engine damage. Another major issue is that the timing chain is located at the rear of the engine, which means that replacement is an intensive, labor-heavy service requiring partial or full engine removal. What Needs to Be Done When timing chain wear is confirmed, the repair needs to be approached as a complete system, not simply “replace the chain” and call it a day. Depending on what the inspection reveals, this can include timing chains, guides, tensioners, seals, and other related components. We also inspect the surrounding areas for oil leaks and signs of wear while everything is accessible. Pro Tip: If you start hearing noticeable rattling on startup, the car develops timing fault codes, or you’re seeing unexplained oil leaks, don’t wait until the check engine light comes on. By that time, you might be dealing with a bigger problem. Result: A smooth ride and a happy driver. The goal isn’t just to quiet a noise or clear a code.
